Often used in wetland restoration, this vigorous sedge grows large spiky heads on wide leaf blades. The seeds are a challenge to get out of the pods, but the birds seem to enjoy the challenge. This sedge is a cool-season perennial, and so forms seeds early in the season, and drops its seeds in the summer. Such sites as pond edges, ditches and depressions, low lying areas, floodplain meadows, and boggy areas all need specialty wetland tolerant species. Each of these environments need a different group of wetland plants because of such things as water depth and period of time submerged.

Seeds and Plant Production. The seed matures in 90 to days, and an acre can produce 1, lb (TJAI, ) to 2, lb of seed (Clark, ). There are approximately 4, seeds/lb (Woodruff et al., ), and there are about 60 lb/bushel of grain (Murphy, ). There is a low percentage of hard seeds.   * Seeds remain viable in the soil for many years The above list also shows why crown vetch can be a good addition to areas like slopes around buildings or driveways, lawns too steep for mowing, and similar situations, but the plant is a slow starter in initial application, taking from 2 to 5 years to fully establish.

Colorado vegetable gardening success depends, in part, on which part of the state you live in. Gardeners on the Western Slope, near Grand Junction, can grow almost any vegetable successfully, while those living in the mountains face the challenges of poor soil and a short growing season. Seed improved cultivars of this grass no deeper than ¼ inch on fine textured soils and ¾ inch on coarser textured soils. Planting with a grass seed drill on a firm, weed free seedbed at the rate of to pounds of pure live seed (PLS) is encouraged. Broadcasting at a higher seeding rate (50 to

Improve air & water quality A forest floor of leaves and decaying wood acts as a giant sponge by absorbing, holding and filtering water; one acre of trees provides fresh, clean oxygen for seven. Water and keep soil damp until the seeds sprout.

Furrows or Rows: Following the seed package instructions for depth, dig a shallow trench through the soil. Sprinkle your seeds along the length of the trench according to the spacing recommendations on the seed package then cover the seeds with soil. Water gently and keep the soil evenly moist.

Soybeans adapt to a range of soil textures and conditions. Soil pH should be or above, so apply lime accordingly. Loose, well-drained, loamy soils are most ideal. Fields can be compacted or become crusted as soils dry out, to manage for both.

Soybeans require all the same nutrients as corn and wheat, but they require them in different amounts. The potting soil will provide your seedlings with their initial food as the roots grow into the other amendments, helping them break down and become good soil.

County soil survey books describe the limitations of a particular soil for agricultural production, and this information is helpful, especially with land the producer has not.
